FG endorse ABU Zaria as IIOE Nigeria National Centre by Musa Abubakar

The Federal Ministry of Education has approved the sitting of the International Institute of Online Education (IIOE) Nigeria National Centre at Ahmadu Bello University as part of the UNESCO International Centre for Higher Education Innovation (UNESCO-ICHEI) requirement.

In a recent letter to the Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University,the Director of University Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs. R.G. Iliyasu, states the approval of the Minister of Education.

On April 20, 2022, the Nigeria National Centre of the International Institute of Online Education (IIOE) was launched sucesfully at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria.

The Federal Ministry of Education, National Universities Commission (NUC), Ahmadu Bello University, UNESCO-ICHEI, UNESCO Priority Africa and External Relations Sector, UNESCO Regional Office in Abuja, worked collectively to organize the event



The Center is anticipated to leverage the networks and assets of IIOE, establish a connection between UNESCO-ICHEI and the Nigerian higher education community, and birth a local higher education ecosystem that is supportive of Nigeria’s national development strategies

The Center’s successful launch would succor in West Africa’s and Nigeria’s transformation to a digital higher education system.

Furthermore, the collective effort of IIOE Nigeria National Center and associates would impart significantly to pervade the digital divide in the global south and achieving SDG4.

Speaking at the occasion, Director of UNESCO-ICHEI,Prof. Li Ming disclose that UNESCO-ICHEI was devoted to assisting Nigeria in its journey toward the digital transformation of higher education.

Prof. Ming was convinced that the IIOE Nigeria National Centre will successfully bridge the gap between UNESCO-ICHEI and Nigeria’s higher education sector.

Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University,Prof. Kabiru Bala, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Ahmed Doko Ibrahim, believes the facilities supplied by UNESCO for the project will improve work and be accessed by all other universities in Nigeria.
Representatives of the Federal Ministry of Education, National Universities Commission (NUC), University of Lagos and other key stakeholders spoke at the one-day event.

The pinnacle of the occasion was presentations on the IIOE Nigeria National Centre Implementation Framework and Work Plan by the Programme Officer, UNESCO-ICHEI, Ms. Qiao Shi, and the Head, Department of Computer Engineering, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof. M.B. Mu’azu.

In December 2019, UNESCO-ICHEI,African and Asian HEIs and private sector partners,jointly launched the International Institute of Online Education (IIOE). It was also approved by UNESCO

Since 2019,Ahmadu Bello University as founding member of IIOE's and UNESCO-ICHEI jointly presents substantial cooperation in ICT capacity building,digital infrastructure, academic exchange, and joint research.
