We’re Tired of Surviving School - We Want to Enjoy It Too

By: Danjuma Hajara Garshena

When we think about school, the first thing that often comes to mind isn’t the vibrant campus life or the endless opportunities for learning. Instead, we think of the never-ending assignments, the constant pressure to perform, and the constant feeling that we're just barely keeping our heads above water. As students, we’ve become experts at surviving school, but isn’t it time we started enjoying it, too?

We wake up early, barely able to drag ourselves out of bed after a night of studying or scrolling through endless social media posts. We juggle lectures, assignments both individual and group all while trying to maintain some semblance of a social life. It’s exhausting.

The term "surviving" has almost become the same with being a student. From the pressures of maintaining good grades to navigating an overwhelming social environment, it feels like our primary goal is simply to make it to the next day. We’re constantly tired, mentally drained, and emotionally exhausted. And yet, we do it because we’re told that this is the way to succeed, the way to graduate, the way to make something of ourselves.

But what if there’s more to school than just survival?

Somewhere along the way, many of us have lost sight of why we’re here in the first place: to learn. In the chaos of deadlines and exams, it’s easy to forget the excitement we felt when we first chose our field of study. We were eager, curious, and passionate. But now, it feels like the joy of learning has been buried under mountains of assignments and the fear of failure.

It’s not that we don’t care about our education, it’s just that we have become so consumed by the grind that we’ve forgotten how to appreciate the simple act of learning. We’re not just here to survive the lectures; we’re here to be inspired, to challenge ourselves, and to grow. Why does that have to be lost in the whirlwind of deadlines and grades?

We’re not asking for a free ride or for school to be all fun and games, We know that hard work is necessary for success. But there needs to be a balance. We want to experience school for what it truly is a place of growth, exploration, and connection.

Instead of constantly feeling like we’re just “getting through” each semester, we want to thrive in it. We want to enjoy the friendships we form, the discussions we have in class, and the moments of inspiration that can occur at any time. We want to be able to step back and breathe without feeling guilty for not being “productive” every single moment.

Imagine a school experience where students are not just working through the stress but actually taking time to enjoy the process. Where we can celebrate small wins, whether that’s acing a test, finally understanding a complex concept, or just enjoying a quiet afternoon in the library. A place where we can ask questions, make mistakes, and grow without the looming pressure of constantly needing to perform.

It’s time for a shift. We deserve to enjoy schoolnot just survive it. We need an environment where we can nurture our mental health, build relationships, and truly engage with our studies without the crushing weight of stress. We’re tired of feeling like we’re just getting by. We’re ready to learn, live, and enjoy the journey.
