ABU Campus Press Organizes Campaign On Objective Citizen Journalism

ZARIA, NIGERIA - June 29, 2024: 

The Ahmadu Bello University Campus Press (ACP) has organized a campaign on “Objective Citizen Journalism” today (Saturday) to promote fact-based reporting and combating fake news.

The event began around 8:00 a.m. at the MACOSA Garden in the Department of Mass Communication, with over 50 members carrying placards bearing enlightening messages and parading through the university's streets. They chanted slogans, including "Fake news is real, avoid it," "If you're not sure, don't share," and "ACP, responsible journalism." Participants shared information with the public about the dangers of sharing unverified news.

Khalifa Usman, a participant, said, "The campaign has taught me the importance of verifying information before sharing it, and I'm committed to practicing responsible journalism."

The rally visited several locations, including the senate building, Social Center, Queen Amina Hostel, Sulaiman Hostel, Icsa/Ramat Hostel, and the Community Market. Members utilized various languages - English, Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, Nupe, and Ebira - to disseminate their message.

The campaign received a positive response from the public, with many expressing appreciation. Participants gained valuable insights into the impact of misinformation and the importance of responsible journalism.

The campaign rally concluded at 11:00 a.m. at the MACOSA Garden, with members committing to promote fact-based reporting and combat fake news. The President of ACP, Comrade Aliyu Baba Mohammed promised to organize more of such educational events on Citizen Journalism to keep the people informed about the nemesis of the fake news and unverified information sharing.
