Mass Communication Student Ends 8-Year Drought as ABU Social Sciences Elects New NASSS President

A 300-level Mass Communication student, Abubakar Basiru, has been declared the new President of the Nigerian Association of Social Sciences Students, NASSS, ABU Chapter, after a hotly contested election that concluded in the early hours of Thursday.

The Independent Electoral Committee, IELCOM, conducted the polls on Wednesday, 10/09/2026 at the Multipurpose Hall, MPH, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Voting commenced in the morning and closed at 4:00PM. Vote counting began immediately and lasted until 2:04 AM on 11/09/2026.

The IELCOM Chairman examined and announced all results at the MPH. According to the official results, a total of 1,431 votes were cast. 13 votes were declared invalid.

Presidential Results:

Abubakar Basiru "Teacher": 981 votes

Bello Mus'ab Aderoju "Smart": 437 votes

With 981 votes, Abubakar was declared winner and President-elect by the IELCOM Chairman.

The victory is historic for the Department of Mass Communication. It is the first time in almost ten years that the department has produced the NASSS President, an outcome that led to massive celebration among students.

Immediately after the announcement, students from Mass Communication, Sociology, Political Science, International Studies, and Economics rallied across campus streets through the night. They rode in cars and marched on foot, playing music and chanting victory slogans and "aluta" chants.

After the celebration, the celebrants escorted the women to their various halls of residence on campus, led by university security officers, and then turned to theirs still celebrating.

The IELCOM Chairman announced results for other executive offices first, before calling out the presidential result last.

The new executive is expected to lead the Faculty of Social Sciences, ABU Zaria, for the 2026/2027 session.
