THE IMPACT OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN JOURNALISM

By Azeez Sulaiman

The widespread adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) marks a transformative era in journalism, continuously reshaping the profession in many ways. With over three hundred newsrooms worldwide integrating AI tools into their workflows, AI has profoundly impacted modern journalism. According to statistics from the Reuters Institute, the integration of AI into news production and distribution is accelerating at an unprecedented pace. McKinsey’s report corroborates this, stating that nearly 54% of media outlets leverage AI for predictive analytics, such as forecasting article popularity.

For clarity, Artificial Intelligence is a broad term that refers to the collection of ideas, technologies, and techniques that relate to a computer system’s capacity to perform tasks normally requiring human intelligence. In the context of journalism, AI technologies facilitate newsgathering, content creation, fact-checking and audience engagement, making them indispensable in today's media landscape. Some prominent AI tools in journalism include OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google's Perspective API, Reuters' Lynx Insights, and among others.
The relationship between AI and journalism is symbiotic. While AI technologies are created and deployed by technological professionals, journalists increasingly rely on AI tools to streamline processes, analyze large datasets, and enhance storytelling. While the journalism industry would struggle to maintain relevance without embracing AI, these technologies cannot thrive without skilled journalists guiding their use. To summarize the importance of AI in journalism by listing a few key innovations would be oversimplification. Imagining the future of journalism without the contributions of AI tools seems almost impossible in today's digital age.

One of the core strengths of journalists lies in their ability to conduct thorough research before disseminating any information. This research spans multiple areas like the geographical location being reported on, the content of the report, and the people involved. It also extends to understanding their audience and tailoring content to resonate effectively. Research is, therefore, an indispensable tool in journalism as it easily allows media professionals to deliver precise and relevant information. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a game-changer that streamlines research processes. Similarly, news loses value if it fails to reach its audience promptly. Journalists can now use natural language processing and predictive algorithms to quickly gather, analyze, and conduct background research and disseminate information quickly.
Going by the uses and gratification theory, the relationship between media and its audiences is basically hinged on the convergence of media content by the audience's short- and long-term needs. As content creators, journalists face the challenge of crafting pieces that resonate deeply with their audience. AI alleviates this challenge by providing insights into audience behaviour and preferences. This allows journalists to produce more targeted and impactful content. ChatGpt has proven to be invaluable to me in my newsletter at the Global Citizenship Foundation. I use it to create a list of ongoing conferences or seminars worldwide.

AI also plays a vital role in investigative journalism. Recently, while producing my faculty's bi-weekly newsletter, I undertook an investigative report on a scammer who preys on students on campus. During the investigation, a source I interviewed provided a false name that made me doubt the credibility of the story he even provided. How did I discover it? I used Truecaller to verify the name and traced his social media handle. This demonstrates how AI empowers journalists to fact-check effectively and maintain the integrity of their reporting. Moreover, (AI) also profoundly affect journalism in breaking language barriers. AI tools have enabled seamless translation of information from one language to another, making it accessible to wider audiences.

Beyond my career as a journalist, I am also a writer. I assist students in crafting statements of purpose for scholarships and vetting their curricula vitae. AI platforms like ITRASTEXT have been invaluable in ensuring these documents meet the language standards of specific regions. For example, when writing for institutions in the UK, I adjust the settings of the platforms to conform to UK English, and I do the same for American English when required. This feature ensures that the documents' tone, style, and language align with their intended audience's expectations.

Despite its positive contributions, artificial intelligence (AI) also introduces notable challenges to the field of journalism. One significant concern is the potential erosion of ethical standards, particularly in the area of transparency. Over-reliance on AI leads to a lack of disclosure regarding its role in research, content generation, editing, and fact-checking. Few journalists openly acknowledge how AI has contributed to their work, raising ethical questions in a profession that prioritize accountability and proper attribution. This lack of transparency risks undermining public trust in journalism as audiences may question the authenticity and credibility of AI-assisted reporting.

Inversely, there are challenges attributed with the effective usage of AI. The list are inexhaustible. However, the most significant is a versed knowledge about prompt engineering, which can make or mar the result you get from AI. A well-crafted prompt can yield high-quality, contextually appropriate information, while a poorly framed prompt may produce misleading or irrelevant content. For journalists who lack proficiency in prompt engineering, this learning curve could lead to dissemination of inaccurate or misleading information, ultimately harming the credibility of their reporting.

Finally, there is a pressing need for comprehensive communication, awareness campaigns, and educational initiatives to equip journalists with the knowledge and skills required to harness the full potential of artificial intelligence (AI). Organized workshops, seminars, and training programs can play a pivotal role in enlightening journalists about effectively integrating AI into their workflows, enhancing their productivity and professional output. Journalists will also optimize their research, content creation, and fact-checking processes by understanding AI's tools and capabilities while streamlining their operations to save time and resources. Moreover, these advancements can open up new avenues for economic growth, enabling journalists to adapt to the evolving demands of the digital age, such as data-driven reporting and personalized storytelling.
By and large, fostering AI literacy among journalists has a broader societal impact. It ensures a more informed public, as AI-powered journalism can deliver accurate, timely, and diverse news content. This contributes to a well-informed social ecosystem, where technology and human expertise work in synergy to uphold the principles of free and fair information dissemination. Therefore, investing in AI education for journalists is not just an opportunity but a necessity to ensure the sustainability and progress of journalism in the modern world.
