The rally, organized by the ABUSRC Health and Sanitation Committee in collaboration with the ABUSRC Drug-Free Club, took participants across different parts of the university campus. Messages on the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of healthy living were shared with students. This was followed by a dialogue session where participants discussed drug abuse, addiction, and their effects on young people.
Mental Health Symposium
On Saturday morning, activities continued with a Mental Health Symposium held at the Assembly Hall, Samaru Campus. The symposium featured distinguished speakers and health professionals who addressed various aspects of mental health and addiction.
The focus was on “Understanding Addiction in All Its Forms: Drug, Cigarette, Pornography, Social Media, Toxic Relationships, and More.”
A panel discussion titled “Protecting Our Future: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Youth Health and Wellbeing” also held. Panelists emphasized the need for greater awareness, early intervention, and healthy coping mechanisms among young people.
The session gave students the opportunity to learn from professionals and gain a deeper understanding of addiction and its impact on individuals and society.
Basic Life Support Training
Later on Saturday evening, participants received training in Basic Life Support (BLS) and emergency response.
The training began with a lecture by Superintendent M. Sanusi, who discussed major causes of emergencies — human, environmental, and mechanical — and stressed the importance of responsible behavior and preventive measures.
Participants were introduced to emergency assessment principles, particularly Airway, Breathing, and Circulation (ABC). An Assistant Superintendent from the Fire Service also spoke on emergency response and safety measures.
The practical session was led by Dr. Jamil Paki of the Department of Anaesthesia, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), alongside other medical professionals. Students were taught Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and how to respond to emergencies while awaiting professional medical assistance.
The series of activities marked a significant start to ABUSRC Health Week, combining drug abuse prevention, mental health awareness, and emergency response training to promote a healthier and safer student community.
The program was coordinated under the leadership of Abdullahi Idris Mohammed, Chairperson of the ABUSRC Health Week.
