Media Trust Group Appoints ABU Lecturer Dr. Kabiru Danladi Lawanti as Editor-at-Large

Dr. Kabiru Danladi Lawanti of the Department of Mass Communication, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, has been appointed Editor-at-Large by Media Trust Group, publishers of Daily Trust, Trust TV and Trust Radio.

Media Trust announced the appointments on Monday, August 31, 2026. Dr. Lawanti was named alongside Dr. Shuaibu Mohammed of the Department of Political Science and International Studies, ABU, and veteran journalist Adamu Lawal Toro.

Media Trust said the appointments are to strengthen its editorial direction with expertise in political science, media and communication scholarship, journalism, editorial leadership, public affairs and strategic planning.

Dr. Lawanti has over 15 years experience across academia, journalism, media consultancy and communication research. At ABU Zaria, he lectures undergraduate and postgraduate students on media studies, journalism, communication research and digital media. He also lectures undergraduates on Media and Conflict.

His areas of scholarship include media and democracy, social media activism, political communication, media ethics, digital culture and strategic communication. He has supervised several undergraduate and postgraduate projects and has published in academic journals.

Dr. Lawanti also has newsroom experience. He has worked with the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, New Democrat and People's Daily, where he covered news reporting, feature writing, editing, opinion journalism and media relations.

Colleagues in the Department of Mass Communication described the appointment as a boost for ABU and a recognition of the department’s contribution to media scholarship and practice in Nigeria. Students across the faculty have also congratulated him and testified to his versatility in the media.

The other appointees are:

Dr. Shuaibu Mohammed, Senior Lecturer, Department of Political Science and International Studies, ABU. He specializes in identity politics, peace studies, ethno-religious conflicts, federalism, governance and security.

Adamu Lawal Toro, a veteran journalist and public affairs analyst. He worked with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, between 1984 and 1997, with postings in Maiduguri, Sokoto, Abuja, Lagos, Minna, Harare and Johannesburg. He served as NAN Southern Africa Bureau Chief and later as Director, Bauchi State Commission for Youth and Women from 2007 to 2015.

New Media Trust Group Editors-at-Large

Media Trust Group said the three Editors-at-Large will bring complementary experience in academic research, political analysis, newsroom practice and strategic communication to its operations.
