The ongoing week-long activities of National Association of Social Science Students (NASSS) has kept the whole of the faculty in glamour through a series of events ranging from public lecture, sporting activities and the cultural display by the students.
The public lecture was earlier delivered by the Chairman Baumasters Project Limited, Mr Yakubu A. Ibrahim with the theme: Politics, Business and Social Media: Understanding the Flat World in the 21st Century.
The event was graced by the special guests, management, staff and students of the faculty, headed by the Dean of the faculty, Prof. Shamsudeen Muhammad, Deputy Dean, HoD of political science department and other dignitaries within and outside the Faculty of Social Sciences.
Day two and three of the week witnessed sport games of different kinds, including Tennis, Snooker, Chess, Whot, among others. The third day experienced the display of different cultural elements by students to showcase their uniqueness and the beauty in cultural diversity. The Nigerian languages that participated include: Nupe, Igala, Ebira, Fulani, Hausa and Yoruba cultures.
Each of the cultures exhibited the beauty and unique nature of their cultural activities, such as dressing, food, dancing, etc. In the end, the Fulani culture got the 1st position from their unique display, while others were also appreciated for holding up to their identity.
Some of the participants who spoke to our reporter at the event appreciated the organizers for coming up with such amazing events that educate, inform, and entertain their spirit of studentship, and provide them with a sense of belonging.
“I have been following the activities of the NASSS Week, and to be frank the organizers have done well considering the amazing contents of the programmes they put together right from day one of the public lecture to this moment. Students have been educated, informed, and also entertained within these few days,” Yusuf Sa’ad stated.
On his part, the President of the Association, Comrade Umar J. Umar said the association's leadership under his watch has carried out a series of capital projects and programmes geared towards the welfare of all the students in the faculty in particular and the university community in general.
“Yes, we've carried out projects aimed at improving the academic environment of our dear Faculty. We've been able to renovate the New Lecture Hall toilet, and Dunmoye-Faculty Garden, organized a debate Competition, and for the first time in the history of NASSS, the association through the office of the Editor-In-Chief pushed to produce a Magazine that would feature interesting stories about the faculty, ABU and Nigeria as a whole. But due to the time and financial constraints, we're not able to complete the project. However, the template is already there and the incoming leadership could just complete the project.
“In addition, it's said that all work without play makes Jack a dull boy. So, we've also organized social events for our students to freshen up their brains. We held Football competitions, Freshers' Fiesta, Walk-Out, among others. And surely, we could do more before we hand over after the election of New Excos.”
The President pledged to leave good legacies that his administration will be remembered for. He further thanked the Management, Staff and Students of the faculty for their unwavering support so far.
