In Memoriam: Dr. Gamji Musa – A Legacy of Knowledge, Compassion, and Mentorship

With profound sadness, the ABU Campus Press mourns the passing of Dr. Gamji Musa, a distinguished lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. His sudden departure on March 2, 2025, during the Isha prayer in the blessed month of Ramadan, has left a deep void in the hearts of his students, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Dr. Gamji Musa was not just an academic; he was a mentor, a guide, and a beacon of inspiration. As a lecturer, he was known for his exceptional teaching style, which combined simplicity with depth, making complex concepts easily accessible to his students. He was the kind of educator who did not merely aim to teach but to ignite passion in his students for their field of study. His courses, particularly Computer for Mass Communication 1 & 2, were highly regarded by all who offered them, and his commitment to ensuring that his students understood and excelled in their work was unwavering.

Dr. Musa’s influence was felt deeply throughout the Department of Mass Communication, but perhaps most notably in the elective course of Community Media. Those fortunate enough to take his class in their 300-level years will remember him not just as a lecturer, but also as a mentor. In a course that required a hands-on approach to learning, Dr. Musa carefully selected a small group of committed students to guide them on projects that would benefit local communities. His philosophy was clear: community media wasn’t just an academic discipline—it was a tool for societal change.

One particular lesson that stands out in the teachings he gave his students, is to create a platform that would promote the values and interests of their local communities. The goal was to ensure that these platforms would continue functioning even after the academic program had ended. Dr. Musa believed deeply in the importance of sustainability and impact, and his encouragement to keep community media alive long after the course concluded is a legacy he left us with.

His mentorship extended beyond the classroom. Dr. Musa actively engaged with his students through digital platforms, offering guidance and sharing resources via WhatsApp groups. His words of encouragement and insistence that students take community media seriously—not just for grades but for the long-term development of their communities—were vital to shaping a generation of media professionals who would carry his teachings into the world.

Dr. Musa’s impact was not confined to his students or his courses. His personal presence was always felt at the faculty mosque, where his commitment to prayer and devotion to his faith served as an example for all. He was a man who lived with purpose, and his passion for media, education, and community development was matched only by his piety.

The passing of Dr. Musa is one huge loss, not just for the Department of Mass Communication but for the entire Ahmadu Bello University community. His legacy lives on in the countless students he mentored, in the platforms he helped create, and in the lives he touched through his wisdom, kindness, and dedication.

As we mourn his loss, we also express our deepest condolences to his family, the ABU Mass Communication Department, his colleagues, and all his students. May Allah grant Dr. Gamji Musa eternal peace and elevate his status in Jannah for his contributions to knowledge and to his community. We take solace in the fact that his work, his teachings, and his spirit will continue to guide us in the years to come.

May his soul rest in peace, and may we, his students, continue to honor his memory by advancing his vision of the media as a force for good in our communities.
