ABU Wins Top AI Education Award

As Microsoft's Country Manager for Nigeria and Ghana, Ola Williams unveils a $1 million initiative to equip one million Nigerians with Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills, attention has shifted to higher institutions that are driving the next generation of AI talent. Among the leaders is Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), with its B.Eng. Computer Engineering (Artificial Intelligence Option) program which recently received national recognition as the “Best AI or AI-related Programme" on February 17, 2025.

In a letter to Vice-Chancellor Professor Kabiru Bala, Chairman of the 2025 AI Awareness Day Awards Selection Committee, Professor Nasiru Maiturare announced that Ahmadu Bello University had won the “Best AI or AI-related Programme Award” among all universities in Nigeria.

The entry submitted by Professor Emmanuel Adewale Adedokun stood out for its excellence and impact in shaping Al policies within higher education. The award was formally presented during the Al Awareness Day ceremony, which was held virtually on the 17th of February 2025 at 2:00 PM

The AI Awareness Day in Higher Education is an event that promotes awareness and understanding of Artificial Intelligence among tertiary education institutions. It was organized under the leadership of Distinguished Emeritus, Professor Peter Okebukola. The event featured four prestigious awards: the Best Institutional AI Policy in Higher Education Award; the Best AI Researcher in Higher Education Award; the Best AI or AI-related Programme Award; and the Best AI Application for Enhancing Teaching and Learning.

However, ABU won the Best AI or AI-related Programme Award category and emerged second position in the Best Institutional AI Policy in Higher Education Award category.

As the University celebrates this achievement and prestigious award clinched on the strength of its B.Eng Computer Engineering (Artificial Intelligence Option), the focal point is now on the future. Ahmadu Bello University is committed to empowering students with the skills and knowledge needed to develop AI-driven businesses that can help to provide a sustainable livelihood to Nigerians and the world at large.
