 By Ibrahim Abdulsalam Olasunkanmi,

In a nail-biting conclusion to the highly anticipated HOD's Cup tournament, the U19MM squad of the Mass Communication Department, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, emerged victorious against their U18 counterparts. The final match, played under light rain that added an extra layer of drama to the proceedings, kept spectators on the edge of their seats and showcased the very best of collegiate football and departmental camaraderie.

The U19MM team, riding high on their semi-final success, faced a formidable challenge from the U18 side, who were determined to claim their first title in four attempts. The match began with an explosive start as Abdulbasit, U19's prolific striker, found the back of the net, sending their supporters into a frenzy.

However, the U18 team, displaying remarkable resilience, fought back fiercely. It was the tournament's standout player, Mustapha "Effect," who once again rose to the occasion. Having notched a hat-trick in the semi-final, he delivered when it mattered most, scoring a crucial equalizer that pushed the game into a penalty shootout.

The penalty shootout was a showcase of nerves of steel and goalkeeping prowess. U19's keeper pulled off a spectacular save, tipping the scales in their favor. The decisive moment came when Hassanic, recently returned from injury, stepped up to take the final penalty. With ice in his veins, he slotted home the winning kick, securing the HOD's Cup for U19MM.

Post-match reactions were a mix of jubilation and sportsmanship. U19's captain, still catching his breath from the intensity of the match, shared his thoughts: "The first time was at the group stage. The second one was at the final. This time, we asked ourselves, 'How much are we going to play? We put in all the efforts, and we made it.' My teammates were the ones that gave me this finish. Every time, it's my team and my coach. Yes, everything was my team and my coach."

When asked about the experience, he added, "The game was very fair. Everything was nice. Definitely, it’s the final and it was tough but it was a very good game."

The victorious coach couldn't contain his delight, expressing how the team's hard work and dedication had paid off. He also extended his gratitude to the department for organizing the tournament, highlighting how it fostered harmony and togetherness within the Mass Communication community. Looking ahead, he expressed enthusiasm for future tournaments.

On the other side, U18's coach, Haruna Musa, displayed admirable sportsmanship in defeat. While acknowledging the disappointment of not securing a win in their four tournament appearances, he praised the fairness of the game. "There was no fight, no foul play, and thankfully, no injuries," he remarked, before congratulating the winning team on their success.

Ayanphe Wordsmith, a devoted U18 supporter, voiced his disappointment but remained proud of his team's efforts. "They've given their all from the very beginning of this tournament," he stated, showering the players with accolades for their commitment and performances throughout.

As the curtain falls on this year's HOD's Cup, the tournament will be remembered not just for its thrilling football, but for the spirit of unity it fostered within the department. The U19MM team's victory serves as a testament to their skill, determination, and teamwork, while the gracious conduct of all participants underlines the true value of collegiate sports.

With memories of penalty heroics, last-minute equalizers, and sporting camaraderie fresh in everyone's minds, anticipation is already building for next year's tournament. One thing is certain: the HOD's Cup continues to be a highlight of the Mass Communication Department's calendar, bringing students together in the beautiful game of football.
