The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID), through its Campus Reporter platform, has officially launched the 2025 Empower Women in Media training cohort, an intensive 10-week program designed to build the next generation of investigative female journalists in Nigeria.

The 2025 edition of the Empower Women in Media training program officially commenced this week, following a competitive selection process that saw over 100 applicants vying for a spot. Out of this number, only 26 outstanding young women were selected to take part in the prestigious 10-week capacity-building initiative aimed at nurturing the next generation of gender-sensitive journalists.

Participants will benefit from female expert-led sessions on journalism fundamentals, Open Source Intelligence (OSINT), investigative reporting, and fact-checking. The training is scheduled to hold every Tuesday from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM and aims to enhance practical reporting skills while promoting gender-balanced storytelling.

As part of the program, participants will pitch story ideas that reflect gender inclusivity. Selected pitches will receive full funding from CJID, and the best stories will be published on the Campus Reporter platform. Additionally, top performers will be awarded letters of recommendation and mentorship opportunities from experienced female journalists.

To support active engagement, participants with at least 80% attendance throughout the training will also receive data allowances. The onboarding session featured an interactive Q&A segment where facilitators addressed all inquiries, reinforcing the program’s commitment to participant support and learning.

Among the selected participants for this year’s cohort are Sylla Hawau, Abdullahi Hajara, Amina Ismaila, Taiwo Ayoola, and Hajara Danjuma—young women from Ahmadu Bello University, Mass Communication department and active members of the Campus Press Club.

The Empower Women in Media program represents more than just training—it is a platform for empowering young women to drive change through powerful, impactful storytelling.
