On September 14, 2025, students of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, embarked on a groundbreaking initiative, the first-ever campaign aimed at raising awareness about the welfare of campus cats.

The campaign was led by Ubaidullah Alhassan, a third-year student of Pharmacy, and Nana Aisha Panti, a final-year student of Industrial Design. Their mission was to draw attention to an issue long overlooked, particularly as the university’s long holiday approaches, a period when the cats on campus are left most vulnerable.

The sensitization drive brought together students and volunteers from different faculties. The team visited key areas of the university, including all Phase 1 hostels, Danfodio, Icsa, Ramat, Ribadu, Alex, Amina, and Suleiman, as well as some faculty areas.

Students were pleasantly surprised by the initiative and turned out in large numbers to engage with the campaign. Many expressed their support by contributing donations in cash and food items, showing solidarity with the cause.

The campaign was more than just an awareness exercise; it was a powerful reminder of the values of compassion, kindness, and community responsibility. It demonstrated that young people are capable of driving meaningful change and ensuring that even the most overlooked members of the community are not forgotten.

The Campus Cats Welfare Awareness Sensitization Campaign has set a precedent at ABU as the first of its kind. It not only brought attention to the welfare of campus cats but also underscored the role of students in fostering a more humane and caring campus environment.

This inspiring movement stands as proof that youth-led initiatives can spark positive change, and it has paved the way for future interventions to safeguard the well-being of animals within the university community.
