The Mass Communication Students Association (MACOSA), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, convened its congress meeting on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at the Multi-Purpose Hall (MPH), drawing participation from students across all levels.
Addressing the congress, MACOSA President Jimoh Sultan Olamilekan reaffirmed his commitment to transparency and outlined an activity schedule for the upcoming semester.
Key programmes announced include MACOSA Week, a Movie Night, an academic seminar, a Gym Walk Out, and the MACOSA Football Cup. He also noted that the association would actively participate in the forthcoming Faculty Elections.
A proposed budget detailing funding strategies for the planned activities was presented to the Congress for review.
One of the major highlights of the meeting was an interactive session where students voted on whether the Mass Communication department should form an alliance with the Sociology department in the race for faculty presidency. The proposal received a decisive majority in favour.
The Welfare Director provided an update on the newly introduced suggestion box at the MACOSA Secretariat, noting that it has already begun to receive feedback from students. She encouraged continued participation, assuring that submissions are being reviewed and addressed.
As part of efforts to support academic excellence, a 400-level first-class student, Amina Ismail, was invited to speak, particularly to 100- and 200-level students. She shared effective study techniques and practical approaches to tackling examination questions, with attendees actively engaging and taking notes.
In addition, MACOSA officially launched its e-library to enhance students’ research capabilities. Improvements were also made to the department’s library facilities, including the repair of lockers and the provision of padlocks to ensure the safety of students’ belongings in compliance with library regulations.
The issue of adopting corporate departmental uniforms was also put to a vote during the meeting, with approximately 100 students endorsing the proposal, leading to its approval.
To encourage early engagement with campus journalism, copies of the ABU Campus Press were distributed to 100-level students as part of practical training initiatives.
The meeting concluded with students leaving well-informed about upcoming activities and developments within the department.
