Why Do Our Differences Divide Us?

 By Musa Aliyu

Different colors, one bridge, one sunrise.

Nigeria is a country of many people with different backgrounds, cultures, beliefs, politics, and values. But instead of these differences serving as an avenue for growth, they have become reasons for conflict. Why?

In the first place, difference itself has never been the problem. The problem is how individuals and groups see these differences, and that determines whether they lead to conflict or development.

Difference is a normal part of human experience. In fact, it is what makes life interesting. Problems in a society do not start because of the differences we have. They start when we begin to buy into the idea of “US versus THEM.”

The moment we start identifying only with our group, we begin to view everyone outside that group with suspicion, mistrust, and even hostility. This is how simple variations that God created for recognition turn into divisions. And through these divisions, conflicts arise.

Let us embrace our differences and build one strong society.
