A devastating fire ravaged the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Community Market in the early hours of February 12, 2025, leaving a trail of destruction and despair. The inferno, which lasted for nearly three hours, was sparked by an electrical fault that rapidly escalated into a massive blaze.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire began at approximately 1:00 a.m. with a plume of smoke emanating from one of the shops. Moments later, it exploded, sending flames shooting into the air and rapidly spreading to adjacent shops.
Despite the efforts of fire extinguishers and students who helped in quenching the fire, the fire continued to rage unchecked, When the flames were finally brought under control, the devastating extent of the damage became clear.
About 20 shops were burnt with shop owners losing millions of naira in goods and equipment. The ABU community has been left in shock and sadness, with students and staff alike expressing their condolences to the affected shop owners.
Concerns are being raised about the safety and infrastructure of the market. The ABU community remains in a state of mourning, hoping that swift action will be taken to support those affected and prevent repeat of such tragedy from occurring again.
