Buhari, a retired general, twice led the country—first as military Head of State from 1983 to 1985, and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. His leadership, marked by a strict anti-corruption stance and military-style discipline, left a lasting imprint on Nigeria’s modern political history.
Sources close to the family stated that Buhari died peacefully after a prolonged illness, surrounded by loved ones.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led tributes, calling him “a man of unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity, discipline, and integrity.”
During his presidency, Buhari championed anti-corruption reforms and national infrastructure development. However, his tenure was also criticized over economic challenges, security crises, and concerns about civil liberties.
He is survived by his wife, Aisha Buhari, and their children. The federal government has directed that national flags be flown at half-mast in his honor. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon.
As condolences pour in from leaders and citizens around the world, Nigeria mourns a man who, for better or worse, helped shape the nation’s post-independence journey.
