ABU Campus Press Observes As NASSS Screens Aspirants

The National Association of Social Science Students (NASSS) has successfully screened the aspirants vying for the executive positions of the association at the NASSS Secretariat in preparation for the forthcoming election.

The screening which commenced on the 12th August, 2023 was expected to last for three days. The aspirants were put on their toes as they faced a series of questions regarding their potential roles and responsibilities if elected. The Independent Electoral Commission (IELCOM) of NASSS conducted  the screening with much focus on the candidates' school ID card, faculty due receipt and other necessary requirements.

During the screening, the aspirants were asked on various topics and aspects of leadership, including their understanding of the responsibilities associated with their desired positions and strategies for resolving misunderstandings, grudges, and disputes or leadership crises among fellow executives. They also faced questions on how they would handle the outcome of the election if they should lose.

One of the aspirants, Ketura John, a 300-level student from the International Studies department who is vying for the position of Vice President 1 said she is determined to build upon the achievements of the current executives. She commended their efforts in overcoming challenges facing the association.

According to her, "The current executives have made significant strides and I will always acknowledge their accomplishments which I will love to build upon."

Another aspirant, Al Mustapha Ayuba, a 200-level student from the IS department aspiring for  Senate faced questions on  balancing his responsibilities as a senator with his academic commitments. He assured the panel that, "I will give equal importance to both roles and ensure that one does not hinder the other."

Bashorun Isa of Political Science (200L) who is contesting for the position of Vice President 2, highlighted the non-functioning toilet facilities in the faculty as a major concern. He pledged to address this issue promptly. Stating that, "I will collaborate with the Students Representatives Body of the school to ensure that the toilets are fully functional."

On his part, Dauda Mubarak Bola, a 200L student of Sociology who is aspiring to become the next Public Relations Officer two (PRO 2) said the school politics is not a do or die affair, pledged to concede defeat in the case of losing at the polls.

"I will congratulate the winner and continue to assist and support them in any way I can."

Following the screening, the Caretaker Committee expressed confidence on the preparedness of the aspirants. Their impression was judged by the aspirants' display of readiness and capabilities based on the screening process thus far. According to the source, "they appeared well-prepared and held promises for the next administration. We're confident of their promises."

The screening exercise which concluded at exactly 06:15 pm on the first day was scheduled to begin at 10am the following day so as to attend to the remaining aspirants.
