A Matron at the ABU Medical Centre, C. A. Adams, took proactive steps to educate patients about Lassa Fever during a recent awareness lecture held at the facility’s waiting area

While addressing patients waiting to see health consultants for diagnosis on the morning of February 23, 2024, Matron Adams emphasised on the severity of Lassa Fever and its potential threats, particularly during the dry season. She highlighted on the various modes of transmission, including direct contact with infected individuals and consumption of contaminated food.

Matron Adams also stressed on the importance of preventive measures such as regular handwashing and maintaining cleanliness in living spaces, while also emphasising the necessity of seeking medical attention promptly upon experiencing symptoms such as high fever, coughing, vomiting, and diarrhea.

During the lecture, Matron Adams engaged with patients, addressing inquiries about the transmission of the virus through handshakes and the availability of a vaccine. She clarified that while handshakes could facilitate transmission through exposure to infectious fluids, there is currently no vaccine available, with efforts still in the trial phase.

Despite no reported cases in Zaria, Matron Adams urged heightened vigilance among the populace, citing instances of Lassa Fever in neighboring Kaduna. To further empower attendees, handbooks were distributed following the lecture, providing vital information to safeguard against the disease’s spread.

Matron Adams’s proactive initiative demonstrates ABU Medical Centre’s commitment to community well-being and public health. Through education, awareness, and preventive measures, Matron Adams strived to mitigate the risks associated with Lassa Fever and ensure the health and safety of the public.
