The Caretaker Committee of the National Association of Social Science Students, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria has today bowed out of the leadership space of the association after spending almost two years piloting the affairs of the association. The end of CTC administration marked the beginning of the newly elected excos of the association who were inaugurated at the occasion to take over the leadership affairs of the association.

The inauguration ceremony which took place at the lecture theatre one (LT1) of the faculty of social sciences witnessed the presence of the invited guests, students and members of the university community who came to witness the historical handover of the association to democratically elected excos after its suspension from political activities and the subsequent COVID-19 break and ASUU strike that gulfed two years (two academic sessions).

In his opening remark, the Chairman of the caretaker committee, Comrade Nura Sani Magaji said the association under his watch has achieved some developments despite the limited powers they have as caretaker committee. He mentioned some of the achievements to include: Students academic improvement through tutorials organized by the association and strengthening of the students-lecturers academic relationship for easy communication.

However, he added that a lot still needs to be done in the student-lecturer relationship and the disunity among the students of different departments within the faculty. He called on the new excos to be united so as to achieve the needed growth and development of the association.

"We were operating with very limited powers as Caretaker Committee, this means that we could not execute or carry out many projects independently. Notwithstanding, we were able to improve the academic performance of many of our members and strengthened their academic relationship with the lecturers," he said.

Comrade Nura further appreciated the students, especially the tutors and the management of the faculty for their untiring efforts and support throughout their stay in office.

Earlier, the former president of the political science department, Comrade Usman Abdulrazak who delivered the opening speech called on the new excos to work as a team in order to achieve the set objectives of the association.

In his address, the new president of the association, Comrade Umar J. Umar said he and his team are ready to kickstart the tasks before them; saying the association under his leadership is prepared and ready to address or tackle some of the challenges of the association in no distant time.

He said the team will try its possible best to execute or implement his Five-Point-Agenda to fulfill the promises he made during the campaign and/or electioneering activities.

"We know the association is facing a series of challenges, but we're ready to deal with those challenges in due course.

"My team is also ready to bring my campaign five-point agenda into life. These include academic excellence, students welfarism, cultural and social integration, professional development and community engagement," he said.

Comrade Umar called on the excos to work as a team for greater achievements, while he also appealed to the students and the management to jointly collaborate with them in bringing the needed change into the association within the period of their service.

Some of the excos who spoke to our reporter expressed their readiness in discharging their duties diligently.

The closing remark was made by Comrade Ibrahim Fareed who is the immediate past faculty representative at the Students Representative Council (SRC). He congratulated the new excos and urged them to always be steadfast in carrying out their duties no matter the difficulties.
